TERRITORY DAY
Today is July 1st, which means those in the Northern Territory are celebrating Territory Day. Territory Day is the one time each year when Aussies don't need a permit to buy and set off fireworks, but only in the NT. They can only be launched between 6pm and 11pm. It's all in celebration of the day the Northern Territory was given the right to govern itself. Before that, it was the federal government that made laws for people living up here. But as much fun as fireworks can be. To stay safe, pick a responsible adult to light the fireworks. Clear the area of any dry materials. Have a hose or buckets of water handy and keep everyone at a safe distance.
PARAMOUNT WARNER BROTHERS MERGER
Paramount's multi billion-dollar takeover of Warner Brothers has hit a speed bump. The two media and entertainment giants made a $160 billion dollar merger deal back in February, which means everything from big Hollywood studios to around 50 global TV channels and Paramount + and HBO Max streaming services will all be controlled by one corporation. While it's been cleared by many countries, including Australia, the UK has hit the brakes over antitrust concerns, saying the deal could have a big impact on news, kids' TV, and streaming there, and the companies have until July 6th to respond to the concerns.
WIMBLEDON
Wimbledon has kicked off, and Aussie Maya Joint was thrown in the deep end, facing tennis legend Serena Williams, who came out of retirement to play singles for the first time in 4 years. But it was 20-year-old Maya who edged out in front in a tight three-set battle. Fellow Aussies Alex de Minaur, James Duckworth and Kimberly Birrell also made it through to the second round.
WOMEN'S T20 WORLD CUP
The Aussie wins continued on the cricket pitch, where our women's team has booked a spot in the T20 World Cup final after defeating the West Indies by eight wickets. Beth Mooney and Ash Gardner led the way as they now go after their seventh T20 World Cup title.
LEBRON JAMES
Going after a new team is basketball legend LeBron James, who has just announced he'll be leaving the LA Lakers after 8 seasons. The four-time NBA champion says he'll be continuing his NBA career somewhere else but hasn't revealed where he's playing next.
SAM KERR
Someone who has revealed where they're playing next is Matilda's captain Sam Kerr, who has signed with Gotham FC, marking the Aussie's return to the US after leaving Chelsea. The move sees Kerr reunite with the club where she last played for back in 2017.
SPACE WALK
First up, to the International Space Station, where these astronauts have gone on a space walk to do some repairs on a robotic arm! This kind of thing isn't too out of the ordinary, and the arm is actually designed with replaceable components and planned maintenance in mind, but the view is pretty out of this world.
UNDERWATER SCIENTISTS
Over now to a new underwater home for humans! Yep, here on a seabed in the Florida Keys is what's called a subsea habitat, allowing scientists to stay underwater for days at a time. It has enough room for 4 people to live and work, with a kitchen, showers, toilets, and of course a great view of sea creatures!
ARTIFICIAL LIGHTNING
Finally, to a lightning laboratory in London. Try saying that 10 times fast. Here, scientists make artificial lightning. Not just because it looks cool. See, they reckon global warming will mean more lightning strikes and more chances of things like bushfires. So, this set-up gives them the opportunity to learn more about the phenomenon and create better protection systems.
