What is Chi Sao & Why You Should Do It

Description

What is Chi-Sao? What's the point? It's an important question and if we don't get the answer right we end up messing up Wing Chun completely because it's a central part of it. Ip Ching called it the glue.

Okay, so first, at close-range we need to learn to simultaneously attack and defend the body's weakest targets. Like the eyes, neck, and throat. We can't make a mistake in either extreme, which is to say we can't ignore these targets nor can we exchange full power shots to them. That's where Chi-Sao comes in. It teaches us to control the game on the inside. It teaches us to relax, use springy energy, to read the enemy's force and use it against him. It teaches us to explode into openings without leaving ourselves open. And it does all this safely! That's the key right there. We need to develop the reflexes or else under pressure we won't function. Again: unless we develop the proper combat reflexes Wing Chun is useless and chi-sao is the primary drill in which the system teaches us to do this.

In the video Sifu Jason of the Ip Man Wing Chun Union explains this and, not just that, our lineage's unique perspective on the drill.
