What does the word 'backlash' mean? Here is an interesting word that is used a lot these days, especially when we are describing a reaction to something that causes anger or disagreement. The word is ‘backlash’. As a noun, this particular phrase relates to a strong reaction to some sort of social or political change. A certain thing that has or will be changed in some way that causes strong disagreement might create backlash. A government plan to make changes to a social rule or law might cause a backlash, if it is seen as unfair or illegal. The reaction is the backlash. A government backlash or a political backlash occurs. A negative reaction can also come from the general population in the form of demonstrations or public protests. The word ‘backlash’ can also name the action of a sudden, forceful, backward movement. It can also be described as a ‘recoil’. A reactionary backlash can be described as resistance, retaliation, repercussion, or response. To push back against the new law or a change of policy is a backlash. The reaction is normally a strong one, involving many people. The reaction to something said or done might also be described as a backlash, especially on social media, where open and frank exchanges often happen. A famous person might make a comment or express an opinion on a social platform, which creates a backlash from other users with an opposite point of view.
