For the last few years I’ve watched AI become astonishingly good at making pictures. Like many artists, I found myself wondering: what is the point of spending a lifetime learning to draw if a machine can produce beautiful images in seconds?
I realised what I was experiencing wasn’t just uncertainty – it was grief.
This video is my attempt to make sense of that feeling.
I explore an idea I’ve only recently begun to formulate: that perhaps the real role of an artist was never simply to make pictures. Perhaps our role is to contribute to something much larger – a shared culture, a common wealth that every generation inherits and every creator has the opportunity to enrich.
It’s an unfinished idea, and I’d genuinely like to know what you think.
