What has happened with Indonesia’s foreign policy over the past two years? | Decoding Indonesia

Description

Other than Indonesia's first leader, most Indonesian presidents have kept a low international profile. We believe this has happened for one obvious reason, because the last time we had a president whose global standing was prominent, Indonesia was pulled deep into the heat of the Cold War, and the country had to pay a severe price for its decision to favor one side over the other.

President Prabowo Subianto has broken new records with his foreign trips, to a point where he has received criticism.  It certainly has been a dizzying few years in Indonesian foreign policy.

Decoding Indonesia’s guest today, Marty Natalegawa, can help us make sense of what has happened in foreign policy over the past two years. Marty served as foreign minister between 2009 and 2014 under the administration of president Susilo Bambang Yudhoyono, and was also Indonesia's permanent representative at the United Nations in New York between 2007 and 2009.
