A waste crisis in a single city can reveal a much bigger truth about our country.
In December, garbage filled the streets and neighborhoods of Banten’s South Tangerang to such an extent that it declared an emergency, showing how easily waste management can collapse when the system can’t keep up.
And this isn’t happening in just one place. The Environment Ministry flagged hundreds of regions last year over illegal dumping and weak enforcement.
Since Indonesia produces millions of tonnes of plastic each year, a large amount still ends up in nature instead of at waste facilities. This crisis needs more than quick cleanup efforts: It needs stronger systems and long-term action to reduce waste at the source.
Until that happens, how many more emergencies will it take before waste management becomes a national priority?
