Most people in aviation are focused on flying or fixing aircraft. A smaller group spends their careers doing something different — working out why flights end badly, and making sure it happens less often.
Aviation safety investigators work for independent agencies around the world. Their job is to reconstruct accidents: what happened, what decisions were made, and what conditions made those decisions possible. The goal is safety recommendations, not prosecution.
It draws on deep operational aviation experience — pilots, engineers, and air traffic controllers who then train in investigation methodology, human factors, and forensic analysis.
This video covers what the role involves, how investigators approach human factors, and what the career path actually looks like.
