Originally written for synthesizers and layered instrumentation, the piece is built around a simple, repeating idea that gradually expands in texture and intensity - a compositional approach Vangelis would continue to explore in later works.
In this piano solo version, the focus shifts to the underlying structure - harmony, rhythm, and the gradual unfolding of the musical material.
🎼 About the music
Released in 1976, Albedo 0.39 marked a shift in Vangelis’s output, moving away from the more choral and classical influences of Heaven and Hell towards a sound world shaped by electronic textures, with subtle jazz and blues overtones.
The album was recorded at Nemo Studios in London and became Vangelis’s first Top 20 release in the UK.
Alpha and other pieces from the album were later featured in various media, including the documentary series Cosmos: A Personal Voyage, where the music accompanied visual sequences exploring science and human development.

Vangelis (Evangelos Odysseas Papathanassiou, 1943–2022) was a Greek composer known for his pioneering work across electronic, ambient, and orchestral music.
He gained worldwide recognition for his film scores, including Chariots of Fire (Academy Award, 1981), Blade Runner, and 1492: Conquest of Paradise, as well as the iconic series Cosmos: A Personal Voyage.
