In 1981, something real landed in a farmer’s field in Trans-en-Provence, France – and it left physical evidence behind.
On January 8th, 1981, at 5:00 PM, farmer Renato Nicolai witnessed a saucer-shaped object, about 8 feet in diameter and the color of lead, descend onto his property. The object took off almost immediately, but left burn marks, compressed soil, and damaged plants.
The French Gendarmerie and GEPAN (France’s official UFO investigation agency) spent two years analyzing the site. Their findings:
Ground compressed by 4–5 tons of mechanical pressure
Soil heated to 300–600°C (572–1,112°F)
Traces of phosphate & zinc
Alfalfa chlorophyll levels 30–50% lower than normal – a biological change
The landing site was near the Canjuers military base, leading some to suspect a secret military craft. But GEPAN found no conventional explanation – no atmospheric or terrestrial cause fit the evidence.
Some scientists questioned the investigation, noting that the ground trace wasn't a perfect circle and that a nearby road had car tire marks. Still, GEPAN stood by the witness's account.
