This Pattern Made Modes Finally Click💡

This little exercise completely changed how I saw the fretboard.

I started with the first six notes of the Aeolian mode, using a Paul Gilbert-style sequence. Then I moved into Locrian and realized I could simply drop down one string and continue the exact same sequence. Because of the guitar’s tuning, I only needed to shift up a half step at one point before repeating the pattern again.

Before I knew it, I had connected the entire fretboard all the way to the next octave.

That was the moment the modes finally clicked for me.

Once I understood this concept, I started applying the same idea to the other modes. Some of them weren’t nearly as obvious because they aren’t as symmetrical as Aeolian and Locrian, but once I saw the relationships between them, the whole system became much easier to visualize.

Sometimes all it takes is finding the right pattern.
