2:35 Start of the deep dive in Mozart's Adagio
In this video, I take a close look at one of Mozart’s most challenging Adagio variations: a passage filled with 32nd, 64th, 128th, and even 256th notes.
Rather than starting from the time signature alone, I reconstruct the tempo from the fastest written values, following a principle already described by Leopold Mozart: the score itself contains the clues to the composer’s intended timeline. The result is a very different way of reading Mozart’s notation, where even the most complex ornaments and bel canto-like passages fit naturally into a stable pulse.
This is a deep dive into Mozart, historical tempo, notation, Adagio playing, and the practical problem of turning a seemingly impossible score into music.
