Molly the Border Collie FOUND After a Week Lost in New Zealand Wilderness | Helicopter Rescue
When hiker Jessica Johnston fell 55 metres (180 feet) down a waterfall deep in New Zealand's Arahura Valley on March 24, 2026, rescuers airlifted her to safety — but her beloved border collie Molly was nowhere to be found. What followed was an incredible week-long search that captured the hearts of thousands around the world.
After multiple failed search attempts, helicopter pilot Matt Newton of Precision Helicopters NZ refused to give up. Strangers rallied together, raising over NZ$11,000 to fund additional search hours using thermal imaging equipment. On March 31, the team — including a vet nurse, volunteer searchers, and a rescue dog named Bingo — took to the skies one final time. Within an hour, they spotted Molly huddled at the foot of the very waterfall where her owner had fallen. She was bedraggled and hungry, but alive — and believed to have survived by hunting feral animals in the bush.
Molly was coaxed to safety and flown back to the helicopter base, where a tearful reunion with Jessica awaited. ❤️
