Most guitar players already know Mode 1 of the minor pentatonic, but almost everyone only uses it over minor chords.
Here’s a quick fix.
Take an A-shape major chord and connect it directly to Mode 1 of the minor pentatonic. Used this way, that same pattern gives you a simple way to start soloing over major chords.
Could I have built this lesson around the G-shape CAGED chord? Sure. But almost nobody actually uses that shape. I’d rather show you something you’re probably already playing. In fact, for some of you, this may be the only major barre chord you know. Perfect. Now you’ve got a lead pattern that connects directly to it.
The cool part is that this also helps you visualize the relationship between major and minor.
If you already know Mode 1 over the E-shape minor chord, then this lesson immediately shows you where the relative major chord lives. Likewise, if you’re playing the major chord, you can instantly locate its relative minor.
That means you’re not just learning another pattern—you’re learning how major and minor keys connect. It also makes it much easier to identify whether you’re hearing or playing in a major or minor key.
This is just a starting point.
Learning guitar is a lot like learning to talk. If you asked me, “What’s the first word my kid should learn?” I’d say it doesn’t really matter. Just get them making sounds. They’ll eventually discover the words they want to use.
Scales work the same way. Start making music with the patterns you already know. As you play, your ear will naturally lead you toward the sounds you love, and your own style will begin to develop.
Stop learning scales by themselves. Learn the chord they connect to.
