NEW WORDS
‘Yeah, nah’. That’s one of the 314 new words and phrases added to the Oxford Dictionary. The Oxford Dictionary features more than half a million English words from across the globe. It's been around for roughly 150 years and is considered the most highly trusted book of words. And not just 'proper' posh words like 'indubitably ', which means indeed, but slang. Including Aussie terms like ‘donkey vote’ and ‘checkout chick’ which they say have been included because of their cultural importance. Choosing new words is a pretty in-depth process; researchers look into the history and how often words and phrases are used, and even older words can make the cut. Like floordrobe, which they say has been used for around 30 years. Other new international slang included ‘chippy sauce’, which Scottish people use to dip their chips in, ‘crushing it’, ‘blingy’ and the ‘long game’.
GAMBLING ADS
The government is cracking down on gambling ads to try to better protect kids. It just introduced legislation to restrict gambling ads on daytime and early evening TV, during school pick-up and drop-off hours, and banning ads in stadiums and on sports jerseys. It's also looking to ban online ads for users who are under 18-years-old and have social media platforms develop an opt-out of gambling ads option for adults. Some members of Parliament reckon it's not enough and the rules need to be tougher.
NULLARBOR KIDS
The Nullarbor is 1,200 kilometres from Norseman, Western Australia, to Ceduna, South Australia. Three mates, one massive ride. The three mates in question? Guula, Herbie, Banjo and Mystery Man. Okay, minus Mystery Man, this is the core crew. They're all 12-years-old, and together they rode across the Nullarbor to raise money for the Children's Cancer Institute. But it wasn't all sunshine and two-minute noodles, and by day 11, they'd made it to Ceduna! In the end, they raised around $32,000.
TAYLOR SWIFT WEDDING RUMOUR
Over to the U-S, where preparation is underway for a mysterious event at Madison Square Garden. Lots of people reckon it's the wedding of Taylor Swift and Travis Kelce, and while some nearby shops aren't so keen on the disruption, the rumour has many Swifties excited.
NEIL THE SEAL
Finally, to Hobart, home of Neil the Seal. His return has many fans excited, though it's been a little chaotic. He's been disrupting traffic and drawing crowds, which has prompted authorities to remind people to keep their distance.
