A sweeping Tudor mansion with centuries of stories behind it, The Vyne stands as one of Hampshire’s most atmospheric National Trust estates. Its origins stretch back to the 14th century, when a medieval manor occupied the site, but its true transformation began between 1500 and 1520 under William Sandys, later Lord Chamberlain to Henry VIII. Sandys expanded the property into a grand Tudor palace, hosting royal visitors including Henry VIII and Anne Boleyn. Over the following centuries, The Vyne evolved through the hands of the Sandys and later the Chute families, each leaving their architectural mark. In the 17th century, Speaker Chaloner Chute dramatically reduced the building’s size and added the classical north‑front portico—considered the first of its kind in English domestic architecture. The house continued to adapt through the Georgian and Victorian eras, welcoming notable figures such as Horace Walpole and even sheltering evacuees during the Second World War. Its Tudor chapel, original stained glass, and richly decorated interiors remain among its most treasured features.
In 1958, Sir Charles Chute bequeathed The Vyne to the National Trust, ensuring its preservation for future generations. Today, visitors explore its Tudor rooms, classical additions, lakeside grounds, and woodland walks—experiencing a rare blend of architectural innovation and living history.
