You don't shank because your clubface is open — and if you're "fixing" it by twisting the face, you're making it worse. Mike Malaska breaks down the two real causes of the shank (the hosel) and the simple two-ball drill that makes it disappear.
The shank — the hosel, the pitch-out, whatever you're scared to call it — haunts golfers because almost everyone misdiagnoses it. The ball isn't squirting right because your face is open; it's hitting the hosel, and your face can be dead square when it happens. Mike, who fought the shanks himself, shows the two things that actually cause it: your hands moving OUT toward the ball on the way down, and your body drifting CLOSER to the ball through impact. Both shove the hosel into the ball. Fix those two — hands return to where they started, left hip pushes back and away — and the shank goes away.
