In this important lecture delivered at Masjid Dar al-Salaam in Rotterdam on May 16th, 2026, Sheikh Imran N. Hosein examines the profound Qur’ānic subject of Rūm, drawing particular attention to Sūrah al-Rūm and its continuing relevance for understanding sacred history, Christian civilization, Russia, and the unfolding destiny of the modern world.
The lecture begins by setting out a methodology for studying the Qur’ān. Sheikh Imran explains that when Allah mentions a subject in the Qur’ān, the Qur’ān itself must be the first source of knowledge on that subject, and all other sources must be judged in light of it. He also emphasizes the need to study the Qur’ān as one studies the stars: not by isolating one verse alone, but by locating the pattern formed by many verses together.
A major focus of this lecture is the Qur’ānic prophecy concerning the defeat and later victory of Rūm. Sheikh Imran reflects on the opening verses of Sūrah al-Rūm, the historical struggle between the Byzantine Christian state and the Persian empire, and the astonishing Qur’ānic declaration that Rūm would again be victorious after defeat.
The discussion then develops into a deeper analysis of the phrase “before and after” in Sūrah al-Rūm. Sheikh Imran challenges conventional readings and argues that the Qur’ān is pointing to two victories of Rūm, separated by a decisive event in Christian history. Particular attention is given to the schism of 1054, the question of the Holy Spirit, Constantinople, Moscow, and the possibility that the Rūm of the Qur’ān has a continuing historical destiny.
The lecture also explores the relationship between Islam and certain Christian communities, especially through the story of the Christian king of Abyssinia and the Qur’ānic recognition of sincere believers among the People of the Book. In doing so, Sheikh Imran connects Qur’ānic methodology, sacred history, Christian theology, and contemporary geopolitics within a wider vision of the End Times.
