The quantum physics inside a robin's eye

Quantum coherence usually requires a sealed laboratory cooled close to absolute zero. The European robin runs it in the photoreceptors of its own eye — at body temperature, mid-flight, every autumn migration.

A protein called cryptochrome reacts to incoming light. The reaction produces electron pairs whose spin states are sensitive to Earth's magnetic field. The bird perceives the field as a navigational pattern.
