Just across the lagoon from Venice, the island of Burano is known for rows of brightly painted houses lining its canals.
Legend says the tradition began so fishermen could recognise their homes through the thick Adriatic fog. Today every house follows a colour palette approved by the local government, creating the patchwork of pinks, yellows, blues and greens the island is famous for.
Beyond the colours, Burano is also known for its centuries old lace making tradition and its relaxed village atmosphere, where quiet canals replace the crowds of nearby Venice.
