In the vast heathlands of Brandenburg, master shepherd Knut Kucznik does what fewer and fewer people in Germany still do — he follows his flock. Twice a year, Knut walks hundreds of kilometers through the countryside with over 200 black-headed sheep, sleeping under open skies, grazing roadsides and wetlands that no machine could maintain.
But shepherding in modern Germany is far more than a romantic way of life. Knut and his colleagues are the backbone of an entire ecosystem. Without their herds, rare butterflies like the Scarce Large Blue would vanish from northern Germany. Without their careful grazing, ancient meadows would be swallowed by shrubs within a decade.
This film follows Knut through lambing season, sheep shearing, and his annual wandering journey — a tradition that stretches back centuries. We meet the biologists who depend on him, the livestock guardian dogs bred to face wolf packs, and the next generation of shepherds trying to keep the profession alive.
With pastureland disappearing, wolf populations rising, and wool prices at record lows, Germany's wandering shepherds face an uncertain future. Yet they remain some of the most effective conservationists in Europe — caring for a quarter of the world's land surface one step at a time.
