The High-Tech Fuel Cells Replacing Combustion Engines

Casual Navigation Guide 6 days ago

Description

Beyond traditional combustion engines, advanced eco-friendly vessels are running methanol directly through high-efficiency fuel cell networks to generate electrical power. The process utilizes a steam reformer to heat and break down methanol into a hydrogen-rich gas, which is subsequently directed into a proton exchange membrane or solid oxide fuel cell.

Inside the fuel cell, hydrogen molecules split into protons and electrons, generating a clean stream of electricity across an external circuit to power shipboard propulsion. This electrochemical reaction completely bypasses combustion, eliminating loud mechanical noise and harmful emissions while outputting only harmless water vapor, heat, and recycled carbon dioxide.
