Ironton is a small, historically Black community on the Mississippi River, 10 miles outside the levee system that protects New Orleans. In 2021, Hurricane Ida flooded it.
Ida’s winds strengthened from 80 to 150 miles an hour in the day before landfall — supercharged by the Gulf of Mexico, now one of the fastest-warming bodies of water in the world. Its surface has heated nearly two degrees Fahrenheit since 1970, twice as fast as the world's oceans.
Willie Declouet was the first to come back, but many of his neighbors couldn't. Across Ironton, empty lots now sit where houses once stood.
