The Filipino Comfort Food I Make When I'm Homesick (Giniling Recipe) 🇵🇭

Description

Giniling is my favorite Filipino comfort food. It's what I make when I'm homesick, when it's raining, when I just need something warm and familiar over a bowl of jasmine rice. It's also one of the easiest Filipino dishes to make. You probably already have most of the ingredients in your pantry.

🇵🇭 FILIPINO GINILING RECIPE (Serves 4)

Ingredients:
- 1 lb ground beef
- 3 cloves garlic, minced (I always do more)
- 1 shallot, minced
- handful of baby carrots, diced (yes, that's a Mae measurement lol)
- 2-3 potatoes, diced
- 1/4 orange bell pepper, diced
- 1/2 of a 15 oz can tomato sauce (~7.5 oz)
- 3 tablespoons soy sauce, divided
- 1 tbsp sugar
- 1/2 cup water (plus more as needed)
- Black pepper to taste
- 1/4 teaspoon MSG (optional but recommended)
- Vegetable oil
- Jasmine rice, to serve

Instructions:
1. Heat oil in a pan over medium heat. Sauté garlic and shallot until fragrant.
2. Add ground beef and 1/2 cup water. Break it apart and cook until nearly browned (it'll keep cooking later). Season with black pepper and MSG if using.
3. Add carrots, potatoes, and 1.5 tablespoons of soy sauce. Add more water if needed — you want it saucy, not soupy.
4. Stir in half the tomato sauce.
5. Add bell peppers, the remaining 1.5 tablespoons of soy sauce, and sugar. Stir.
6. Cover and simmer until the potatoes are fork-tender.
7. Serve over jasmine rice

Leftovers are even better the next day!
