In July 2014, one of the world’s deadliest viruses arrived in Lagos, Nigeria, a megacity of more than 20 million people. A single sick traveler stepped off a plane from Liberia… and only the quick action of Dr. Ameyo Stella Adadevoh stopped Ebola at the door.
Her decision to isolate the patient immediately gave Nigeria time to mobilize. Within days, an emergency operations center was in place. Hundreds of contacts were traced and monitored daily for 21 days. In the end, Nigeria recorded only 20 cases and 8 deaths, a global public health victory.
But this came at a cost. Dr. Adadevoh herself became infected and passed away, along with several colleagues. Her courage saved millions of lives in Nigeria and beyond, and her legacy continues through the DRASA Health Trust, dedicated to infection prevention and health security.
