About 25 years ago, astrophysicists noticed that the universe’s expansion is accelerating. To account for this observation, physicists came up with a new type of energy – called dark energy – which supposedly makes up more than 75% of the universe, and also has negative pressure. In a new paper, mathematicians claim that dark energy isn’t needed to explain that accelerating expansion, and physicists have been barking up the wrong tree for decades. Let’s take a look.

Did physicists make a mistake with dark energy? See why new math suggests we might not need this theory to explain universe expansion.

This video explores a recent claim by a group of mathematicians challenging the foundation of dark energy. If their calculations hold up, it would signal a major shift in modern astrophysics. We break down the original observations from 25 years ago that suggested the universe expansion is accelerating and compare them against these new mathematical findings.
