🌮 Taco Politics Report
🎙️ “The Bucket of Crabs Syndrome”
There is a conversation that many Hispanics have had behind closed doors but rarely in public.
Some Hispanics who choose to fully embrace the American identity—learning English, adopting American customs, serving in the military, becoming entrepreneurs, or simply saying, “I’m proud to be an American”—often hear labels like:
* “Vendido.”
* “Nopal.”
* “Te crees gringo.”
* “Ya se te olvidó de dónde vienes.”
The criticism isn’t about abandoning your roots—it’s about the perception that becoming more American somehow means betraying them.
For many immigrants, integration has always been part of the American story. Italians, Irish, Germans, Japanese, Koreans, Vietnamese, and many others have blended their cultural heritage with a shared American identity over generations. Their traditions remain, but so does their commitment to becoming part of the nation.
The question is whether we, as Hispanics, sometimes make that journey harder for one another by discouraging people who want to integrate.
You can love your family’s traditions, speak Spanish at home, enjoy your culture, and still proudly wave the American flag. Those ideas don’t have to compete.
America has always been strongest when people bring the best of where they came from while embracing the country they chose—or the country that chose them.
The real question isn’t whether someone is “too American.”
It’s whether we are encouraging success and civic participation—or pulling each other back into the bucket.
What do you think? Have you ever been called “vendido,” “nopal,” or “te crees gringo” simply for embracing the American way of life?
