The 8GB MacBook Neo: A Photographer’s Honest Review & Speed Test

Terry Lee White Guide 4 months ago

Description

In this video, I put Apple's lowest priced MacBook ever to the test. With an A18 Pro chip and only eight gigabytes of unified memory, this $599 machine isn't being marketed to pros. It's built for students and millions of other casual users out there. But I know people would be curious on whether or not it's good enough to do creative or pro work.I ran the MacBook Neo through twelve tasks in Adobe apps like Lightroom Classic, Photoshop, and Premiere. To see exactly what it can do, I compared it directly against my 14-inch M4 MacBook Pro, which originally cost $2,749—about four times the cost of the Neo.We'll cover the hardware in detail, including the good, the bad and the quirks. I highlight the premium aluminum build and sixteen hour battery life. However, I also break down the limitations you need to know about: the strictly sRGB display, the lack of a backlit keyboard, and the limit of just one external display. I'll also warn you about the USB ports, since only one of them operates at USB three speeds. Finally, I will show you the ultimate workflow hack to bypass the 8GB wall by doing some of that heavy lifting in a web browser.Could you get by with it for your personal projects? You tell me in the comments.
