Description
Nydia needed a healthy kidney in order to survive.
Kim, a longtime nurse, decided to donate one of her two healthy kidneys after seeing firsthand how living organ donation can improve lives.
The transplant was successful. Nydia received Kim’s kidney in a procedure at Penn Medicine in March 2026. Today, Nydia is once again driving, volunteering, playing with her grandchildren – things she'd lost the ability to do before. Kim is fully recovered and back to work.
The transplant was anonymous, which is protocol. Neither Nydia or Kim knew as much as the other’s name. When they both expressed an interest in meeting, however, Penn Medicine took proper steps toward making it happen. What happened next captures the profound impact of living organ donation.
