TELSTRA OUTAGE
A big Telstra outage has left thousands of people unable to make calls or use the internet on their phones, but it's also caused havoc in other areas. Telstra, Australia's biggest mobile network, was hit by a nationwide outage yesterday affecting payment systems, traffic lights, public transport, phone calls, and of course, the internet. Last night, Telstra said it had fixed the main problem behind the outage, but mentioned that a secondary technical issue was still affecting some emergency calls. Hundreds of welfare checks have been carried out since, with many referred to emergency services for extra assistance, and there are still some regional train services that continue to be impacted. For now, Telstra says it believes the outage was caused by a software defect, and that there is no sign of it being a cyber attack, but they're still trying to get to the bottom of what exactly went wrong.
STATE OF ORIGIN
New South Wales has claimed the State of Origin Shield. The Blues beat Queensland 30-12 in the decider, with Nathan Cleary starring, scoring two tries and kicking five from five. But the match wasn't without controversy, after a missed knock-on led to this try by NSW's Bradman Best, which the NRL later admitted was the wrong call.
AI ACTRESS
An AI-generated "actor", Tilly Norwood, is set to star in her first feature film. And some people aren't too happy about it. This is Tilly Norwood. She's caused a bit of an uproar in the film industry because she's apparently the world's first AI actress. She was created last year by Particle 6, an AI production company, which says she's now going to star in her own movie! And, well, spoiler alert, it will be about Tilly and how she navigates her AI world, or what they call the "Tillyverse". Particle 6's CEO says AI can support filmmaking, as long as humans are still involved. But SAG-AFTRA, the American actors union, disagrees, saying it creates problems for real actors looking for work.
OODGEROO NOONUCCAL
To celebrate NAIDOC week, we're bringing you the stories of some iconic First Nations Aussies voiced by First Nations kids. Today Jaden will tell you all about one of Australia's most famous poets, Oodgeroo Noonuccal! This is Oodgeroo Noonuccal, who was also known as Kath Walker. She was a Noonuccal woman born on Minjerribah in Queensland in 1920! Even as a young girl, Oodgeroo had a talent for reading and writing. When she was thirteen years old, she left school to work as a maid in Brisbane, but she would secretly read books from the libraries she cleaned! Over the years, Oodgeroo took up jobs in the Australian Women's Army Service, and in politics, where she learnt even more about writing and public speaking. Eventually, Oodgeroo joined a writer's club and published a collection of poems called 'We Are Going'. It was the first published book by an Indigenous woman. Oodgeroo often wrote about the treatment of First Nations people, and the effects of colonisation. She helped to campaign for the 1967 referendum, and was the first Indigenous woman to run for state parliament. Oodgeroo died in 1993, but she's remembered for her words and the changes they helped to make.
