Fernando Martinez took the new Tamron 12-20mm F2.8 out to see what it could do during one of NYC's brutal heatwaves, just to see what this thing could actually do. He ended up wandering the streets for some candid shots, drove up to the Catskills for a night of astrophotography, and even popped into a museum to mess around with interiors.
The 12-20mm range is wild and going that wide changes how you see everything, and it takes a minute to wrap your head around framing shots this way. But the F2.8 aperture stays constant throughout the zoom, which makes it a genuinely solid option for night sky shooting or dim interiors where you need all the light you can get.
What surprised us most: how light this thing is. At just 4.7" and 570g, it doesn't feel like you're lugging around a "pro" lens, but it's still built like one.
A few things worth knowing:
🔹 XGM and GM aspherical elements keep things sharp corner-to-corner, even at 12mm — no mushy edges or weird color fringing
🔹 VXD linear motor autofocus is fast, precise, and quiet
🔹 Close-focus down to 7.1" at the wide end, so you can get surprisingly tight, dynamic shots even with this much lens
🔹 Moisture-resistant build with a fluorine coating, so it can handle getting caught in the elements
🔹 12-blade circular diaphragm for smoother, more natural-looking bokeh
