A thoughtful and well-spoken university student approached our sign at UCLA with what he believed was the strongest argument against God’s existence and something he’d been pondering for a while now:

Animal suffering. The suffering of creatures who made no choices, carry no guilt, and have no voice to ask why.
He was sharp, prepared, punched back respectfully and groundedly.

What followed was one of the most honest conversations in this series. We explore the problem of evil, the nature of animal consciousness, and what a truly merciful God would mean for a world where suffering exists beyond human cause or consequence.

And then, right at the end, he told us something we didn’t expect.
