Smart Sparring & Jeet Kune Do: Don’t Make This Mistake! #jeetkunedo #jkd #sparring #bruceleestyle

The biggest mistake in Jeet Kune Do isn’t just NO SPARRING, but BAD sparring. Going out there and not having a plan is a disaster. Sparring must be carefully calibrated in order to develop the muscle and tactical memory we seek. Just letting people figure it out on their own is a bad idea. It leads to brawling and tons of frustration. Instead, a good JKD coach will give you sparring as a laboratory. They’ll see sparring not as the ultimate, but as an essential drill for timing, distance, and accuracy. Of what exactly? The Jab!

Unless and until you can use your leading jab well under some pressure, you won’t be able to land an eye jab or a low kick either. Lots and lots of sparring should be done for just this reason. If you introduce too much other stuff before that skill is developed, you’ll get a student who can’t control the measure, counter consistently, or truly utilize JKD’s systematic.
