The first step of the explanation is to perform a psychological force (for the classic version).
Explain to the spectator there are two different types of cards: the pip cards and the face cards.
This method consists in forcing the spectator to choose the face cards. You ask the spectator what of the two types of cards he prefers. Fortunately for us, almost always, spectators will answer the face cards. If he chooses the pip cards, you tell him to keep these cards and you hold the face cards. Among your face cards, you can now ask him to select one of the three figures.
