The Rigveda's most underrated heroine is a small, very cute female dog who faced an entire merchant tribe alone.
In the 108th hymn of the 10th Mandala, Sarama, Indra's divine hound, crosses the river Rasā to confront the Panis, the merchants who stole the gods' sacred cows. They threaten her. They try to bribe her. They even offer to make her their sister. She refuses every single offer.
This tiny dialogue carries the entire ethical core of Aindric worship: loyalty and honesty above all else. And hidden in the story is a startling civilizational thread, the Panis may be the same people the Greeks would later call the Phoenicians.
Sarama is also the mother of the Sarameyas, the four-eyed watchdogs of Yama. The dog as a sacred figure runs deep in Vedic thought.
