Notes on the collection:
Rhett Eala revisits personal memory in this collection, drawing inspiration from his mother, artist Roceli “Baby” Valencia, whose deep affection for Japan shaped the visual world of his childhood. A frequent visitor to the country, Valencia collected objects, textiles, and memorabilia that later filled her antique shop in Hong Kong and their home in Manila. Among her most vivid memories was a month-long stay in Osaka in 1970, a journey that deepened her admiration for Japanese craft and culture. Through the photographs, stories, and treasured pieces she brought home, Japan became a quiet but constant presence in Eala’s upbringing. This collection reflects that inherited fascination—translating memories, objects, and stories into designs that honor the elegance, restraint, and enduring beauty of Japanese aesthetics.
