Description
Emotions remain extremely high more than 24 hours after a young man was shot and killed by ICE in Biddeford.
A federal immigration officer fatally shot 26-year-old Johan Sebastian Guerrero in Biddeford on Monday morning. ICE said in a statement that Guerrero was fleeing the scene during an enforcement action. However, Guerrero was not the intended target of the ICE operation.
According to ICE, a targeted surveillance operation began at 7 a.m. Monday at the last known address of a person the agency says was in the country illegally.
The shooting occurred around 7:30 a.m. at the intersection of Pool and Hill streets.
According to Sen. King, the initial information provided by the Department of Homeland Security was that Guerrero was shot after "weaponizing" his vehicle.
In its first public statement, issued nearly 12 hours after the shooting, ICE did not mention that allegation. Instead, the agency said Guerrero was shot while "attempting to flee the scene" and that there were concerns for public safety.
Sen. King says Mullin told him Guerrero was not the person ICE agents were attempting to locate.
According to Presente! Maine, Guerrero was a 26-year-old Colombian national who was authorized to work in the United States and had been issued a Social Security number.
A protest began on Tuesday morning outside the ICE facility in Scarborough. While the demonstration started peacefully, tensions increased as the day went on.
