Rare trail cam footage from India may show something never documented before: a wild fishing cat mother teaching her kittens how to kill and eat a fish.

Meet Ganga — named by the local community after the sacred Ganga River — a fishing cat mother on her fourth litter. Over these clips, watch her drag fish away from the water's edge, crush a skull to soften the meal, call her kittens down from the trees above the clearing, and slowly push her cubs toward independence — even when that means denying a hungry kitten the easy comfort of nursing in favor of a cold, flopping fish.

This footage was captured by the Godavari Fishing Cat Project, a member project of the Fishing Cat Conservation Alliance (FCCA), and shared with us by conservationist Giri Giridhar. The Godavari Fishing Cat Project works along India's Godavari River — home to vital mangrove habitat and one of South India's key fishing cat populations — protecting the species while partnering directly with the local fishing communities who share this water and its fish with them.

That partnership is the real story behind Ganga's success. Fishing cats and fishing communities have historically been at odds over the same resource — fish — but where conservationists and local people work together instead of against each other, both the cats and the people who depend on these waters have a far better chance of thriving side by side.
