We met up with Paul Natkin, a Chicago-based photographer who’s spent decades documenting live music as it actually feels. From packed stages to quiet backstage moments, his work captures artists right in the middle of it, unfiltered and in their element.
Through his contributions to @creemmag, his images helped define how a generation saw rock, blues, and pop. What he built over time is more than a portfolio, it’s a deep archive of music history as it happened.
In our conversation, he walks through how it all started, from shooting a Bonnie Raitt show to landing his first photo in CREEM, and eventually seeing his work come full circle, featured again decades later. His photography is also featured in Issue #7 of CREEM, a full-circle moment that ties past and present together.
