On the occasion of "Walter De Maria: The Singular Experience"—on view at Gagosian, Le Bourget, through June 27—artist Olympia Scarry reflects on De Maria's sculptures.
"The Singular Experience" features the artist's final sculpture, "Truck Trilogy," alongside a selection of other rarely seen sculptures, drawings, films, and archival materials. The exhibition embraces De Maria's ethos of resistance to fixed interpretations, emphasizing instead the direct, unmediated relationship between viewer and artwork—or, as the esteemed critic David Bourdon once wrote, “the singular experience.”
