I'll never forget the look on the doctor's face.
In 2008, my grandfather, Louis Hixson, was hit by a truck on his way to work out at the YMCA in Corsicana. As my sister and I listened to doctors explain his injuries, one doctor came to us with a very unusual concern.
While examining Papa, they had discovered a bullet lodged in his foot.
And from the looks of it, it had been there for decades.
The doctor didn't quite know how to break the news.
We just smiled.
You see, our family already knew the story.
Back in the 1950s, after the Navy sent Papa back to sea, he and my grandmother Virginia divorced. She eventually remarried, but Papa never stopped loving her.
Whenever he came home on leave, he made sure to see her.
One visit apparently didn't sit too well with her new husband.
Papa got shot in the foot.
Being an active-duty Navy man, reporting a gunshot wound would have created a lot of questions, so he never did. The bullet stayed there for more than fifty years.
The best part?
Papa and Memaw found their way back to each other. They remarried in 1969 and spent the rest of their lives together.
A bullet in his foot.
A love story in his heart.
