🐢 What started as a simple visit to a neighbor’s house quickly turned into one of the wildest turtle-catching adventures I’ve ever been part of.
In today’s episode, we head over to a neighbor’s property where an incredibly deep pond holds dozens of massive Chinese river turtles. The water is so dark and murky that you can’t see your own hand underwater, meaning every turtle has to be found completely by feel.
With nearly 50 giant turtles—many weighing between 50 and 100 pounds—we jump into the pond and begin searching the bottom one step at a time. Every time we feel something underwater, we have no idea if it’s a turtle, a log, or something else entirely until we grab it. Once we finally get our hands on one, the real challenge begins… wrestling these incredibly powerful turtles to the surface and safely carrying them to shore.
The turtles are being carefully relocated to my buddy’s zoo, where they’ll have a new home and continue receiving excellent care. After loading each giant turtle into transport totes inside a U-Haul, we begin the long journey north to safely move one of the most impressive collections of giant river turtles I’ve ever seen.
