Nolan Wells case: New GPS data reveals boat's full route different from reports
New GPS data obtained by CBS News from the Mississippi Department of Marine Resources (MSDMR) tracks the movements of the boat Nolan Wells was on before his disappearance from Horn Island on July 4.
According to the DMR report, the boat left a private dock at approximately 9:56 a.m. and arrived at Horn Island at 11:14 a.m. The vessel departed the island at 4:31 p.m. and returned to its original dock, before later traveling into Fort Bayou around 5:52 p.m., returning to the dock at 6:06 p.m., and heading to the Fort Bayou boat launch at 7:19 p.m. From there, it was reportedly transported over land to the boat owner's residence in Biloxi.
The DMR report notes the boat's owner, his mother, and one other individual who was with Wells are cooperating with the investigation. CBS News reports the department's involvement in the case ended on July 5, when the Jackson County Sheriff's Office took over as lead investigative agency.
We break down this timeline and what it does — and doesn't — tell us about the hours before Nolan Wells was reported missing.
This is an active and ongoing investigation. No official cause or manner of death has been released, and no charges have been filed. We'll continue to update as confirmed information becomes available.
