Nendrum is a place. I went there when I didn’t want to live anymore… and something changed. I’ve waited so long to share this the way it truly lives inside me…
I was supposed to be resting my voice during these rehearsals after I got sick on tour with my other band but I had to feel this in all it's glory. My mantra for recovery, now epic and beginning a new journey in my new project Hope Experiment.
Nendrum, a 5th century monastic site sits on Mahee Island in Strangford Lough, just outside Belfast. I stood at the edge of the water, ready to disappear. And then…the world spoke. Birds. Water. Wind through the grass. This is the sound you hear us use, actually recorded at Nendrum.
It felt like everything gently wrapped around me and whispered… stay.
I broke. Not quietly, but with a cry that turned into a wail, like something ancient leaving my body. That day, saved my life.
This song is also for my mum. I lost her so young. And for years, I carried guilt I didn’t understand. I punished myself by not crying. Because even relief felt like something I didn’t deserve. This is that moment. The grief. The love. The release. Now it’s reborn... with voices, with respect, with some of the most beautiful young musicians I’ve ever met… holding me, just like the world did that day.
This is me learning to trust. To let go of shame. To stay.

Kaz Hawkins Hope Experiment will officially launch on 15 August in Saintes, France and is my mental health musical mission to enable safe spaces within my concerts for emotional release. Together we are a collective on a mission of hope through music.
