Must-Learn Legato Licks – Part 2

This is another one of my all-time favorite legato exercises, an idea I picked up years ago from the legendary Richie Kotzen, who is an absolute master of this style.

This pattern does far more than build speed. It develops finger strength, articulation, timing, independence, and the control needed for clean, effortless legato.

What I love most is the sequence itself. Instead of simply running straight up and down the scale, it creates more interesting intervallic movement, making your lines sound more musical, less predictable, and far more expressive.

Try combining this with the Part 1 legato lick to create your own phrases and connect ideas across the fretboard. Mixing different legato sequences is one of the easiest ways to make your solos sound fresh while continuing to build the technique that every serious guitarist should have.

Save this one, practice it slowly with a metronome, and focus on clean, even notes. Speed is a byproduct of control.
