As Greenfield Village prepared a site to welcome the Dr. Sullivan and Mrs. Richie Jean Sherrod Jackson Home, a little rearranging was necessary. To make space for the new home, the William Holmes McGuffey Birthplace was moved farther down Maple Lane and closer to the neighboring McGuffey School.
McGuffey was a significant figure in American education and the creator of the McGuffey Eclectic Readers. His birthplace, which was built around 1780 in Pennsylvania, was moved to Greenfield Village by Henry Ford in the early 1930s. The log cabin’s latest move came with a new dry cellar, electricity and heat, which will aid in its long-term preservation.
