Description
This video shows monkeys living at different places in West Africa.
River Gambia National Park
River Gambia National Park is a protected nature reserve in central Gambia, situated along the River Gambia. It consists of five forested islands in the river and plays a key role in the chimpanzee rehabilitation project. Other primate species, such as baboons and red colobus monkeys, can also be found there.
Tacugama Chimpanzee Sanctuary
Tacugama Chimpanzee Sanctuary is a rescue and rehabilitation centre for chimpanzees near Freetown in Sierra Leone. The centre was established to protect orphaned and illegally traded chimpanzees and to provide them with a safe habitat once again. In addition to nature conservation, Tacugama is committed to education, ecotourism and the preservation of the rainforest.
Forêt Sacrée de Gbêpleu
Forêt Sacrée de Gbêpleu is a sacred forest in south-eastern Guinea, near the town of Man. The forest holds great spiritual and cultural significance for the local population. The sacred monkeys love to eat pieces of banana.
Mole National Park
Mole National Park is Ghana’s largest national park and is situated in the north-west of the country. It is a savannah landscape home to elephants, antelopes, warthogs, baboons and many species of birds. Visitors can explore the park accompanied by a guide. It is one of the more developed parks in West Africa.
Drill Ranch Afi Mountain
Drill Ranch Afi Mountain is a nature and rescue centre located within the Afi Mountain Wildlife Sanctuary in southern Nigeria. The centre is dedicated to the protection of endangered primates, particularly drills — rare species of monkey found only in Nigeria and Cameroon. It also takes in and cares for chimpanzees and other animals.
Camp Abio
Camp Abio is a rescue centre in Congo-Brazzaville that focuses on the protection and rehabilitation of a small number of gorillas. The gorillas come from zoos or have been kept as pets and are therefore unable to survive independently. They live on a few islands and are fed daily.
