With some time left at the end of a previous stream, John 'Turbo' Finlay decides to fire up the SEGA Saturn and take a trip through one of the most fascinating pieces of Sonic history - the Sonic World missions from Sonic Jam. What starts as a quick bonus session soon becomes a showcase of SEGA’s experimental 3D Sonic playground, complete with missions, exploration, unlockables and an early glimpse at the direction Sonic Team would later take with Sonic Adventure. For longtime Sonic fans, this strange and ambitious Saturn curiosity remains one of the most interesting “what ifs” in the franchise’s history.
About the Game:
Released exclusively for the SEGA Saturn in 1997, Sonic Jam was primarily a compilation of Sonic’s Mega Drive classics, but it also included the groundbreaking “Sonic World” mode - a fully 3D explorable environment featuring missions, collectibles and character interactions. Developed by Sonic Team, Sonic World effectively acted as a prototype for the gameplay concepts later expanded upon in Sonic Adventure on the Dreamcast.
