Description
How does laparoscopic lysis of adhesions compare with open adhesiolysis?
This 60-second video explains six key comparisons: surgical access, early recovery, hospital stay, bowel injury risk, choosing the safest approach and possible recurrence.
For carefully selected patients with adhesive small bowel obstruction, particularly a suspected single obstructing band, laparoscopy can offer smaller incisions and quicker early recovery.
Dense adhesions, severely swollen bowel or unstable health may make open surgery safer. Both approaches carry risks, including bowel injury, bleeding, infection and recurrent obstruction. Additional bowel surgery may sometimes be necessary.
Adhesions without symptoms usually do not require treatment. Surgery itself can create new adhesions, and long-term trial evidence has not demonstrated a clear recurrence advantage for laparoscopy.
