Superior Mesenteric Artery Syndrome (SMAS), also known as Wilkie's Syndrome, is a rare condition caused by compression of the third part of the duodenum between the superior mesenteric artery and the abdominal aorta, resulting in chronic upper gastrointestinal obstruction. Patients typically present with postprandial abdominal pain, early satiety, nausea, vomiting, significant weight loss, and malnutrition.
This video demonstrates a laparoscopic duodenojejunostomy, the gold-standard surgical treatment for patients with persistent symptoms or failure of conservative management. The procedure creates a bypass between the duodenum and jejunum, effectively relieving the obstruction while preserving normal gastrointestinal physiology.
