Description
"La Colegiala" (translating to "the schoolgirl") is an iconic Latin American cumbia anthem that tells the simple story of a man captivated by a young student walking by with her schoolbooks. Originally composed in 1975 by Walter León Aguilar for the Peruvian cumbia group Los Ilusionistas, the track perfectly blends classic syncopated tropical percussion with the distinct, upbeat electric guitar riffs of 1970s Peruvian cumbia. However, the song achieved massive global immortality in the early 1980s when Colombian singer Rodolfo Aicardi and his band, La Típica RA7, recorded a blazing, horn-infused cover. Aicardi’s version became an immediate international phenomenon after it was selected as the soundtrack for a highly successful European Nescafé commercial campaign featuring a train winding through Latin America. The song's infectious, danceable rhythm transcended language barriers, dominating European music charts for weeks and inspiring cross-genre covers worldwide, ranging from Italo-disco interpretations by Gary Low to adaptations by the Gipsy Kings.
